3 Most Common Hunting Injuries and How To Treat Them

Thank you for watching this video. Right now we are in the middle of the launch of two new Trauma Kits designed for the modern outdoorsman (or woman).

Ok, I want to start out this discussion with an important reality. There is no serious hunter or backpacker out there who is going to take me seriously if I tell them they need this kit (pictured below) on them at all times, wherever the trail takes them.

*Please note the blood type patch shown is not included

Of course, it would be convenient to have all this awesome medical gear with you 30 miles up the trail from basecamp but it isn’t realistic when so often you are counting ounces in your pack or trying to move quickly.

That said we need to bear in mind that we are talking about being prepared for medical emergencies in places where you may not have cell reception, you might have to transport an injured party for miles back to a vehicle or transportation, and even from basecamp, you might be hours away from EMS response and transport to a hospital.

So what is the strategy I recommend? Bring 2 trauma kits on the outing… a Basecamp kit and a smaller bare essentials kit for the trail.

A basecamp kit should be kept in your vehicle all year round for any medical emergency and when you begin your outdoor adventure you can stage it in camp so anyone in the party can access it.

While too big to realistically take with you on the trail, it becomes a critical asset you can stock with an extensive number of critical tools that will buy you the time you need to get first responders on site. Don’t worry, we are going to get into the details of what is in this kit below.

On the trail, you need something lightweight. Something you are actually comfortable bringing with you that won’t get in the way of your activities. Something that will enable you to manage the biggest emergencies effectively in order for an injured party, even if that is you, to get back to basecamp for better treatment and transport.

Now, here in a minute, I’m going to share with you all the contents in both our Basecamp kit and our “Tracker” kit so you can build these at home if you already have all the components, but this is a good point for me to pause and make an important announcement.

Because Mountain Man Medical wants to support American Outdoorsmen we are officially launching two new trauma kits for sale. It has been a while since we created any new kits but when I recently went on an outdoor adventure of my own I realized none of our existing kits really fit the need of a modern outdoorsman. So we got to work on crafting the ideal kits.

I’m pleased to announce the immediate release of the Mountain Man Medical “Basecamp” and “Tracker” trauma kits.

As I’ve already indicated above, these are custom designed for the outdoorsman and specifically, as their names suggest, to work together to provide a comprehensive but practical approach to emergency medical response during any outdoor adventure.

Let's get into more detail and I want to start with the tracker kit. Now, if you have all these components at home feel free to assemble your own, but please consider taking part in our product launch and using the links below to purchase your own tracker kits.

If you were to purchase each of these components independently it would cost you $85.24 as of this writing. Right now we are pleased to offer the Tracker Trauma Kit for only $70 plus shipping. That is a savings of almost 20% off retail when you order right now.

Let’s take a look inside the kit.

First, the kit is packaged in the Ready Up Gear "Kite" molle pouch. This EDC pouch is meant to be rugged but lightweight. Empty it weighs in at 3.3oz. It includes various organizational pockets including an external mesh pouch. It comes with a simple first-aid style patch attached via hook/loop to the exterior for fast identification.

It includes the SWAT-T tourniquet which is the most versatile tourniquet on the market. Tested and proven as a tourniquet it can also be used for splinting, as a pressure wrap or bandage, a chest seal in a pinch, and frankly it isn't a bad fire starter if you cut off a small piece 🙂

The Tracker includes basic safety gear including a pair of blue nitrile gloves and a set of compact trauma shears.

In addition, the Tracker includes Flat-Folded duct tape which of course comes in handy in a number of situations. Also included is a mylar rescue blanket which can be a critical tool in treating hypothermia and has a number of other potential survival uses.

The Tracker includes rolled QuikClot, which is a hemostatic gauze for wound packing and bleeding control. In addition to the QuikClot, the kit includes two other standard rolls of stretch gauze.

All in the Tracker Trauma Kit weighs just over 12oz.

A few other important things about this kit. There is room in the pouch for you to customize the kit by adding a few things that might make more sense depending on your activity.

Mountain Bikers might have different needs for example than hunters. We’ve included the core trauma essentials but have left room for small items you feel you should add.

It can conveniently be stowed on your belt, on the outside of your bag or just put it inside your pack and use the grab handle to pull it out in an emergency.

If your adventure includes friends, family, or buddies, which is probably wise, we strongly recommend getting a tracker kit for each individual. We know how people often get separated and the kit isn’t designed to treat more than one injured person.

The Basecamp Kit is comprehensive and... well packed full of important medical gear and first aid components. Once again a reminder if you have all these components at home feel free to assemble your own, but please consider taking part in our product launch and using the links below to purchase your own Basecamp Kits.

If you were to purchase all the individual components of the Basecamp Trauma & First Aid Kit yourself and put it together it would cost you $277.26 as of this writing. Right now we are offering the basecamp kit for only $239.99. That is almost a 15% savings when you buy right now.

Let’s take a look inside the kit.

First, the kit is packaged in the Ready Up Gear "Osprey" molle pouch. This tactical pouch is over 4 inches deep, 8 inches tall, and 6 inches wide. It includes various organizational pockets. And like all our kits it comes with a simple first-aid style patch attached via hook/loop to the exterior for fast identification.

The list of components is long so here it goes:

  • Two C-A-T North American Rescue Tourniquets WITH Soft Molle Tourniquet pouches designed to help you stage your tourniquets on the outside of the pouch as shown in the pictures on this page.
  • 1 SWAT-T Tourniquet from H&H Medical
  • 1 OLAES 4" Pressure Bandage from Tactical Medical Solutions
  • 4 Pairs of Blue Nitrile Gloves
  • 1 Pair of Compact Trauma Shears
  • 2 Hyfin Compact Chest Seals from North American Rescue
  • 1 Mini Permanent Black Marker
  • 1 Mylar Rescue Blanket
  • 1 Pre-lubricated NPA
  • 2 Elastic Bandages with hook/loop self-closure (compare to ACE Wrap)
  • 2 QuikClot Rolled Gauze (Hemostatic Bandages)
