Description

Introducing the Active Self Protection Ankle Kit. This kit was built out by John Correia and the rest of the team at Active Self Protection.

*NOTE: Since the above video was filmed John and his team have made a few tweaks to the included components based on the current availability of high-grade options on the market. See below for an updated component list.

John is an industry expert on the analysis of gunfights having studied over 30,000 of them. As a dedicated student and sought out instructor John and his team have assembled this ankle kit using the highest quality name-brand components available on the market today.

First, the kit includes the Wilderness Tactical 5″ Black Ankle Cuff. Made in the USA, the Ankle Cuff includes several pockets and a universal fit design to ensure it can be worn by anyone regardless of their size.

1 TacMed SOF Tourniquet. The SOF® Tourniquet Gen 4 is approved for use by the Department of Defense, approved for use by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, and the tourniquet of choice for the American Red Cross. It folds perfectly to fit into the ankle cuff and is one of the most respected TQs in the world.

1 Compact Trauma Bandage from TacMed Solutions is a simple, effective pressure dressing designed to treat non-life-threatening hemorrhaging. It utilizes an elastic wrap material that can be used to generate pressure and a sterile wound pad that can be placed directly over the injury to aid in the control of bleeding. The bandage is flat-folded and vacuum-sealed to create a low profile so it can be easily stored.

1 Pair of Nitrile Gloves. These are durable, non-allergenic, heavy-duty nitrile gloves designed to be easy to pack and fast to deploy. These are size Large, designed to fit an overwhelming majority of American adults. Gloves are BLUE.

1 Pair of Trauma Shears. Made with quality in mind these shears have been tested to ensure they will hold up to critical medical incidents and trauma. These EMT Shears will fit in any IFAK or medical kit at only 14.5cm long.

2x North American Rescue Hyfin Compact Chest Seals. Designed with 3-vented channels that allow air to escape the chest cavity during exhalation but prevents air from entering through the injury site during inhalation. Each HyFin Vent Compact Chest Seal is 4.75” x 4.75” and made with advanced adhesive to provide a superior adhesion in the most adverse conditions, including sweaty or hairy casualties.

1 ChitoGauze (3″ x 4yd Z-Fold). HemCon® ChitoGauze® XR PRO is a revolutionary hemostatic dressing for the external, temporary control of severely bleeding wounds. This dressing features a polyester/rayon blend non-woven medical gauze that is coated with chitosan. It is Z-folded and packaged in a vacuum-sealed pouch that is compact, rugged and features Red-Tip Technology®.

I really like this kit. At first, I thought it was a little too bulky, but I rearranged the items so thin stuff was in the parts that overlap when closed and it fit much better. I just took a Stop The Bleed class too and this kit has all the equipment they covered in the class. I feel better knowing that I always have these tools on me now.

Looks great, good quality, but I have to buy new pants to wear this thing. It will be in my gear bag, unless I break out my Dad’s 1970 bell bottoms, or I start buying boot leg jeans. lol

Everything’s high quality from the TQ all the way down to the actual ankle cuff itself. I’ve had it for about a week, and I’m still playing with it to try to get the chest seals to not make noise by rubbing against my pants leg. Like Peter said, though, if you’ve got meaty calves (like I do), it can get a little tight getting the pants legs over them.

That said, I’ve worn it all day every day since I got it in the mail and am much happier for having it available.

Amazing kit. Still breaking it in but it is awesome. I carry an IFAK in the car at all times but now I can take this with me throughout the day. The video of John explaining how to assemble the kit for maximum comfort/efficiency is extremely helpful. A bit long on the delivery but it was well worth the wait!!! Thank you ASP and Mountain Man Medical!!!

Love this kit. It is a bit bulky but you can rearrange or remove some things to make it more slim. I tried it on set up like in the ASP video and it was not noticable when wearing my 5.11 pants (I forgot the specific style of pants but they are tactical cargo pants). My American eagle jeans are another story though, I wear the slim style and I could barely get the pants on over the cuff when it was fully loaded. I rearranged everything and removed the TQ and compression bandage, and now it works pretty good with the jeans. It still prints but I have it set up so that it isn’t printing any squares and there’s an empty pocket on the outside of my leg. That pushes all the printing to the inside of my leg so that is less noticable. I doubt anyone will notice it now when I’m wearing jeans. I’ll probably keep it in this configuration for the most part since I already carry a TQ and compression bandage in a crossbody bag (aka a man purse). I might even find something to put in my unused pockets, maybe a knife or small flashlight. If you wear pants that don’t taper around your ankle you should be able to wear it with everything in it. Overall I’m very happy with this kit, it has everything I want in an EDC IFAK and nothing I don’t. The ankle cuff feels comfortable enough and I’m sure it’ll get more comfortable over time. Even if you take some stuff out like I did, you still have high quality stuff that you can carry separately or throw it in another med kit. 10/10 would recommend.

Where have you been all my life?!?!? I love this product and plan to give the ASP Ankle Kit to my adult family members as Christmas gifts.

High quality item. The items in the kit are nice to have in an emergency trauma situation. The kit is bit more bulky than I thought. Wider leg pants are necessary to wear this on a daily basis.

    Excellent Ankle kit very comfortable

I watch Active Self Protection (John Correia) every day. That’s why I bought this Ankle kit. So far I carry it every day (EDC). It’s comfortable and I already prefer wearing boot cut jeans & tactical pants so this fits with no problem. I feel there’s room for more so I’ve added extra rubber gloves in mine. I think I will add an NPA and Mini-pen. Maybe some foldable duct tape. I received everything that is shown… however, in the video below John enthusiastically says we get an upgrade… Russell chest seals. I got the Hyfin chest seals as shown. I worried about my shears falling out so I used a rubber band to hold them in. A little strap with hook & loop might be useful there. But it might stay snug if I add the foldable duct tape there. I will probably buy one of the other kits for my car in the near future.

This ankle kit is very well made and surprisingly comfortable to wear all day. I think it makes for a good insurance policy to have this on my person. I was at first worried about packing everything into the pockets but watch the video and you’ll have no problems. I even added a NAR would packing gauze with no issues.

Cons: Came in about 1 months and a half.
Pros: Everything came as shown. 10/10

  13. Chris (verified owner)

Awesome kit, fits perfectly on my ankle. Comes with everything as shown in above. The only downfall is that it took over 8 weeks to get the product to me.

  14. Evan (verified owner)

Overall, very satisfied. Been wearing it for about two weeks now with no problems. You’ll certainly notice it on your leg, and it does bulge visibly depending on your clothing, but it isn’t uncomfortable, and having the stuff on your person at all times is absolutely worth it to me.

Took quite some time to come in (+6 weeks), but that’s understandable given everything going on with the world recently.

Great mini-kit, contents pack down to a reasonable size & under jeans it’s slim enough to usually go unnoticed unless someone is specifically looking.
Only adaptation I have is that I don’t store my gloves rolled (I prefer them folded & tucked into the kit similar to how it’s shown in the video, so they can be pulled out and immediately put on and this also makes the glove section of the kit slightly thinner).

I recommend writing the expiration dates of everything that has one on a small slip of paper kept with the shears so you can keep track without having to pull the items out every time.

Nice little kit! Could have another pair of gloves though, but not a biggie honestly! 🙂

  17. Greg (verified owner)

Good kit. It’s a bit bulky so you ain’t wearing skinny jeans and this together! Dress or business casual pants are probably no issue going over the kit. My jeans require a bit of finesse to make it work. I also would like to have seen an extra pair of gloves added and if possible, some quick clot. I know that would make it even more bulky but I think that would complete an already great kit. Just my humble opinion. I’ll try to find a way to add these later anyway. One thing getting this kit did is encourage me to find a way to have better kits in my vehicles. I had not carried medical gear since my military days so this is helping me wake up a bit!

Greg, the kit did come with ChitoGauze which is similar to QuikClot. Thank you for the review!

This is a well thought out ankle kit. I like the quality of the components. I have worn the kit all day and it didnt feel like I was wearing anything on my ankle. Fortunately, I have not needed to use the kit and hope that i never have to. I’ll be heading off to Alaska in August and S. Africa in September and this kit will travel with me. I also like the idea that ASP donates the proceeds to worthy causes…good job guys and gals!!
